Women in and around town environments in Faku Division face the challenge of raising families in a situation of high unemployment. Unlike women in more rural environments, cash flow is key to subsistence here.
Women in rural areas such as those with whom we partner in Manyu Division are the key agricultural producers of subsistence foodstuffs, which requires extremely heavy physical work and renders their families vulnerable to the success or failure of crops.
Women in both areas traditionally shoulder the burden of food security and daily household management for their families. Access to education is dependent on disposable income for uniforms, books, and school fees at secondary level. Access to health care and medicines also depends on cash.
Many elderly women find themselves in the position of economically providing for their grandchildren and their fellow seniors as their children’s generation suffers the effects of the AIDS epidemic.
Peacework volunteers have an opportunity to contribute to improving the
lives of women in Cameroon in partnership with the following local
