By law, when orphans turn 18 in Russia, they must leave the orphanage and move out on their own. This transition period from orphanage to living alone creates many needs and challenges for unprepared orphans. Men are drafted into the army at age 18, but young women are faced with leaving the only place that they have called home. Many of them never smoothly transition and turn to drugs and prostitution as they face a future for which they are not prepared. To serve this population, groups have begun creating transition homes for those making this transition.
