The communities along the Guiamas and San Fransisco Rivers in northern Honduras are home to approximately 100,000 women, and the average family includes 5 children. The region has no dedicated doctor, although there is a tiny health center in Santa Lucia where vaccinations and birth control are administered by a traveling nurse. This little block building, approximately 600 square ft, is where Peacework Medical, a subsidiary of Peacework, has worked annually for nearly seven years. It has no electricity, no flushable toilet, and only sometimes a spigot that functions with river water. Women and families put themselves at great risk to try to get to the city hospital in San Pedro Sula in order to give birth, and prenatal care is non-existent.
