Village Partnership with the University of Arkansas in Stann Creek District
Last year, Peacework launched its Village partnership with the University of Arkansas in Stann Creek district. Through this partnership, faculty and students partnered with local counterparts to address issues in Engineering, Education, Business, Literacy, Social Work, Biology/Environmental Sciences, and Agriculture. This program wed academic rigor with concrete community development in a semester-long multidisciplinary course with discipline-specific projects in country over a four-week practicum. Projects included rural water filtration and supply, counseling training for teachers, and the establishment of a sustainable school farm to support school feeding programs. These projects were developed with the local community based on the needs they have identified and are designed to address the multi-layered issues associated with economic, social and educational disenfranchisement.
We are looking for like-minded Global Village partners to work with us in 5 other areas in Belize, on issues relating to education, infrastructure, health, social services and income generation. - [Back]
