Despite its cultural and ecological resources, Belize is burdened by a large foreign debt and expanding trade deficit, the effects of which can be seen in a lack of financial resources for education, health, and social services. Access to medical care is threatened by poverty and Belize suffers from the highest per capita incidence of HIV/AIDS in Central America. Unemployment, domestic violence, and few social workers exacerbate issues affecting quality of life.
