Peacework’s first project took place in 1989 in Esteli, Nicaragua. Volunteers from the Soviet Union and the United States worked alongside refugee families in order to build new homes in the midst of war. Though that project was meant to be a single bridge-building initiative, organizations from other countries soon contacted Peacework with a similar interest in bridging cultures and alleviating poverty through volunteer service.

The nature and scope of our programs has evolved over the years. Today, Peacework serves as a comprehensive agency for international development, education, and service in cooperation with a variety of indigenous community partners and international relief programs worldwide.
